This is Severus. Severus is a 9-month-old German Shepherd with a congenital heart valve disorder. Severus' pulmonary valve, which regulates deoxygenated blood from her right ventricle to her lungs, has a narrowed opening due to the valves being fused together. This is causing the right ventricle of the heart to become enlarged due to having to pump harder to force the blood through the narrowed valve opening, as well as dilation of the pulmonary artery on the other side of the abnormal valve. Think about when you put your thumb over a hose to narrow the opening the water backs up in the hose and squirts out at a great velocity. This is what is happening to Severus' heart. Because of this deformity the lungs cannot efficiently oxygenate the blood supply and Severus can only play for a few minutes before she is out of breath and panting for air. Left untreated this will do permanent damage to her heart and can cause sudden heart failure.
Severus needs a balloon valvuloplasty. This procedure inserts a catheter with an expandable balloon on the end into the heart and places the balloon between the pulmonary valve leaflets. The balloon is then expanded widening the opening between the leaflets, allowing the blood to flow freely. Severus' family lives in Seattle. Severus' primary veterinarian is a graduate of WSU Veterinary School and recommended the surgery be done at WSU. Please help us help Severus get the surgery she needs! Her family has so far paid for all the diagnostics, and saved $1,000 toward the surgery. They have also received a grant from The Mosby Foundation for another $800. CLF is attempting to raise the remaining $3,000. ***Special thanks to CT whose check for Ashes came in after Ashes' fund goal was reached and who then generously donated it to our next pet in need. CT thanks for starting us off on Severus! |
